National Sports Fund key to promoting sports in Maldives: Minister Rafiu

Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has emphasised the importance of the National Sports Fund (NSF) as a cornerstone for advancing sports in the Maldives. The establishment of the NSF was approved by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on November 4, following discussions at a cabinet meeting.

Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News, Minister Rafiu highlighted the fund’s primary objectives: identifying medal-winning athletes, ensuring investment in their development, and supporting associations to foster talent. He described the NSF as a vital investment in the holistic development of Maldivian athletes.

The minister elaborated on the government’s long-term sports development plan, which includes detailed goals formulated in consultation with relevant agencies and sports associations. International experts have also provided recommendations to address key priorities, which are being incorporated into the plan.

“The long-term plan will define the necessary steps for managing the sports sector effectively,” Minister Rafiu stated. He also noted significant progress in developing the plan over the past year.

Looking ahead, the minister underscored the importance of building a high-performance centre, which he described as essential for the future of Maldivian sports. The initiative, long overdue, is now included in the 2025 budget, with construction expected to commence soon, he added.

Additionally, the minister announced plans to address disparities in salaries for athletes and sports officials, ensuring equity in compensation as part of the 2025 budget framework.
