President announces decision to establish National Sports Fund

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the decision to establish a National Sports Fund. The decision was announced following the latest cabinet meeting. The decision, made after careful consideration of a proposal by the Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu, aims to boost the number of players and athletes, develop sports, and empower the local sporting community. The Cabinet also resolved to take the necessary steps to establish the fund, including amendments to the Sports Act. The Sports Minister announced the creation of the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) as part of the Maldives’ long-term strategy to develop exceptional athletes, during the Maldives Sports Awards 2024 ceremony. The Minister emphasized that the government’s first step in this initiative is the creation of a comprehensive, long-term plan for the future of sports in the Maldives. This plan focuses on the actions needed to secure medals on a global scale, extending beyond the SAARC region.
