President congratulates historic achievements of Maldivian badminton players

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated Maldivian athletes for their remarkable successes at the Botswana International Series Badminton Championship and the Zambia International Badminton Championship, marking the Maldives’ greatest victory in a Badminton World Federation (BWF) tournament to date.

In a social media post, President Muizzu expressed his pride and extended heartfelt congratulations to the talented players and the entire team for their historic achievements. He acknowledged their dedication and praised the honour they have brought to the Maldives on the global stage.

The Botswana International Series witnessed a groundbreaking moment in Maldivian sports, as sisters Fathimath Nabaha Abdul Razzaq and Aminath Nabeeha Abdul Razzaq faced off in the women’s singles final—marking the first time two Maldivian players competed against each other in the final of a BWF-recognised tournament. Nabaha emerged victorious as the champion, with Nabeeha as the runner-up.

In the mixed doubles category, Nabaha teamed up with Zayan Shaheed Zaki to secure a silver medal, their fifth medal in a BWF-approved tournament. The duo played a closely contested final against Azerbaijan’s Argil Gabilov and Ira Mafteha but fell short with scores of 23-21 and 21-18.

Additional victories included Zayan Shaheed Zaki and Nibal Ahmed clinching the men’s doubles title, while Fathimath Nabaha and Aminath Nabeeha triumphed in the women’s doubles event.
