PNC Reiterates Commitment to Maintain Maldives as Safe Tourist Destination
The ruling Peoples’ National Congress (PNC) has reaffirmed the commitment of the government to maintaining the Maldives as a safe, secure, and peaceful destination for tourists.
The affirmation comes following comments made by Minister of State for Tourism Mohamed Nihad at a PNC meeting held Monday, alleging that the opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had planned actions that may be direct threats on the tourism sector and the economy at large.
In a statement released in response to the comments, PNC said it strongly believes that no responsible political party or civil society organisation in the Maldives would engage in activities that undermine the tourism industry or inflict lasting harm on the nation’s economy. The party emphasised that all entities must act within the confines of the law, and any actions that breach legal boundaries will undoubtedly be met with appropriate measures by the relevant authorities.
The party further reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining Maldives as a safe, secure and peaceful destination for tourists. It stressed that protecting the investments of stakeholders in the tourism sector and ensuring the continuity of the Maldives’ reputation as a world-class destination remained top priorities.
The party urged all government institutions, political parties, civil society organisation and individuals to refrain from actions that could jeorpardise the nation’s peace, stability and economic prosperity.
State Minister Nihad has since been suspended from his position following the remarks.
