Tourism Ministry Reaffirms Commitment to Tourist Safety Amid State Minister’s Suspension

The Maldives will always remain a peaceful and safe destination for tourists visiting the country, the Ministry of Tourism has said.

The Ministry made the remarks in a statement issued to announce the suspension of its State Minister Mohamed Nihad following controversial remarks he made regarding the opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The statement clarified that the State Minister’s comments do not reflect the views of the government.

The statement said the State Minister’s comments do not speak for the government, and assured that the Maldives would continue to be a destination that ensures the safety and security of all its visitors. The Ministry noted ongoing efforts by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s government to uphold the Maldives’ reputation as a safe and popular destination for tourists.

The Ministry outlined that all stakeholders in the tourism industry are working collaboratively to make the Maldives a desirable and hospitable destination for tourists, while ensuring the safety and security of visitors in line with the President’s vision.

‏While the Maldives is on track to achieve its goal to host two million tourists this year, the Tourism Ministry noted that the industry has already recorded several notable achievements thus far this year. The Ministry said the Maldives saw this highest number of tourist arrivals in one day on 10 February, with 10,213 tourists. Additionally, February was also the month with the most arrivals in a single month, recording 217,392 arrivals. These milestones reflect the trust and confidence of millions of tourists that visit the Maldives, it said.
