President says Ex-Govt Pardoned Over 1,900 Prisoners for Elections

The previous administration had pardoned over 1,900 prisoners serving prison sentences for varying degrees of criminal offences ahead of elections, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu revealed Sunday.

Addressing the residents of Thoddoo island, during his ongoing two-day visit to several islands in the Alifu Alifu and Kaafu Atolls, the President alleged that the previous administration had pardoned a total 1,905 prisoners ahead of the three national elections held during its tenure.

The President said hundreds of criminals had been freed with no thought to the safety and welfare of the country.

“Ahead of various elections, prisoners have been released without any rehabilitation. That has led to a lot of dangerous and violent incidents spilling onto our streets,” he added.

Highlighting the cabinet’s decision to allow prisoners to participate in rehabilitation and government projects, the President added that the initiative would ensure their productive contribution to society upon release.

He also said the government wishes to bring peace and stability to society, insisting that his administration government will not engage in revenge politics in any way or form.
