President Dr Muizzu Reaffirms Commitment to Transform Mahibadhoo into Urban Centre
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated his administration’s pledge to transform Mahibadhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, into an urban centre, including the reclamation and development of Maafaru Falhu lagoon. This commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting with the residential community of Mahibadhoo, as part of the president’s two-day visit to several islands in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.
Speaking to the residents, President Dr Muizzu underscored his dedication to fulfilling his promises. The most significant of these pledges, according to President Dr Muizzu, is granting jurisdiction of Maafaru Falhu lagoon to the Mahibadhoo Island Council, a promise fulfilled earlier in April. Highlighting the importance of Maafaru Falhu to the residents, the president announced that land reclamation and other related works will commence next year.
The administration has identified seven islands across the country for transformation into urban centres, with Mahibadhoo being one of them. Developing urban centres is crucial for ensuring the provision of services at the highest standards and for the future development of the country, according to the government. This initiative is part of the administration’s population consolidation programme, aimed at sustainable development nationwide.
“The phase we are commencing now, it aligns with the policies outlined in the nation’s 20-year developmental masterplan. These policies will not conclude after seven regions, as these regions are in urgent need of development. We have identified Mahibadhoo for urban centre development, including the utilisation and development of the island’s lagoon. I assure you that we will implement this policy,” stated President Dr Muizzu.
The developmental plans for Mahibadhoo encompass the expansion of housing options and economic activities. President Dr. Muizzu reiterated his commitment to developing 100 housing units on the island, with the project scheduled to commence next year and progress swiftly towards completion. “With God’s will, we will fulfill the pledge to develop 100 housing units on this island in 2025. I assure you that we will proceed with this project expeditiously and complete it at the fastest pace,” he added.
The government will also undertake all necessary works related to the land reclamation of Maafaru Falhu lagoon, said President Dr Muizzu, including the formulation of a comprehensive land use plan. This plan will designate areas for sports facilities, an Islamic Centre, and a hospital.
