Maldives and Estonia Commit to Digital Collaboration for Enhanced Public Services, Signs MoU for Collaboration
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Estonia’s Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs Tõnis Saar have discussed opportunities for digital collaboration, with a focus on enhancing public services and strengthening e-governance in the Maldives.
As part of President Muizzu’s ongoing official visit to Estonia, Tõnis Saar paid a courtesy call on the President. The meeting took place in the absence of the Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs of the Republic of Estonia.
During the meeting, President Muizzu outlined his administration’s vision for a digitally empowered Maldives and highlighted the ongoing initiatives to prioritise digitalisation in public services. He praised Estonia’s globally recognised leadership in digital transformation, noting its innovative approaches as a benchmark for transparency, efficiency, and accessibility in governance. He expressed interest in leveraging Estonia’s expertise to strengthen the Maldives’ e-governance and ICT infrastructure.
Additionally, he emphasised the importance of advancing cybersecurity and digital literacy, and strengthening the digital capabilities of local governments to enhance public service delivery to a dispersed population and align with the nation’s broader developmental goals.
Tõnis Saar shared Estonia’s experiences and challenges in implementing digital systems across various sectors and the transformative impacts on governance and daily life. He expressed eagerness to collaborate, offering Estonia’s expertise and support to help the Maldives achieve its digital transformation objectives.
Following the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs of Estonia and the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology of Maldives.
