Gov’t aims to diversify fishing industry: Minister Shiyam

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has revealed the government’s overarching goal of diversifying the fishing industry, aiming to transform it into the leading sector driving foreign currency into the Maldives. In an interview aired on PSM News, Minister Shiyam emphasised President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of elevating the Maldives’ fishing industry to new heights. To achieve this, he explained that efforts are being made to ensure the fishing sector reaches a level comparable to that of the tourism industry, providing similar benefits. Acknowledging that 99% of the Maldives is made up of ocean, Minister Shiyam highlighted the numerous opportunities available for diversifying the fishing industry. He pointed out that initiatives are already underway to promote both mariculture and sports fishing, expressing confidence in the potential for success of these initiatives. The minister further noted that during the first year of President Dr. Muizzu’s administration, a conducive environment for industry growth was created, sparking increased interest in investment opportunities within the sector. While the government continues its efforts to expand the fishing industry, it has also established a dedicated agency to oversee the sector’s progress. Additionally, the government is working to promote local fish products in international markets as well.
