Drugs Worth Over USD84 Million Seized This Year: President

The government has stepped up efforts to combat drug trafficking in the country, with six times more drugs seized in the year in comparison to the year before, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said on Sunday.

Addressing the residents of Rasdhoo island, during his ongoing two-day visit to several islands in the Alifu Alifu and Kaafu Atolls, the President said the drugs seized so far this year is estimated to have a street value of around USD84 million.

Noting the significant strides the government has made in combating drug supply, the President said over 150 expatriates linked to drug trafficking operations have been deported.

He said the number is twice the amount than last year, adding that 74 expatriates had been deported in November last year.

“There will no longer be any compromise in the police department now. We want to really solve this drug epidemic. That’s why now there is a special bill in Parliament. Certain powers should be given through the law to solve this in a meaningful manner,” President Dr Muizzu said.

The President said police have raided over 13,435 drug sites this year amid the nationwide crackdown on trafficking, adding that around 8,500 raids were conducted last year.

Once the newly drafted legislation is passed by the parliament, he urged the people to cooperate and support the government in resolving these major issues parallel to the efforts to develop the country.
