Appointment of Russia’s Consul General to Strengthen Maldives Relations, Says Minister Khaleel

Russia’s appointment of a consul general to the Maldives is a notable and significant diplomatic development, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel has stated. Russia has become the first nation to appoint a Consul General to the Maldives.

The announcement was made during a formal meeting wherein the newly appointed Russian Consul General, Aleksei M. Idamkin, presented his Consular Commission Letter to Minister Khaleel. During this ceremony, Minister Khaleel congratulated Consul General Idamkin on his appointment and extended his best wishes for a successful tenure.

Citing the importance of this appointment, Minister Khaleel highlighted that Russia’s decision to establish this consular presence underscores the robust ties between the two nations. The appointment of a consul general will enhance consular services, offering greater support for Russian nationals visiting, residing, or investing in the Maldives, he stated.

Welcoming the consul general’s appointment with enthusiasm, Minister Khaleel highlighted the pivotal role Russia plays as the second-largest source market for tourists to the Maldives. This development would bolster the existing relationship and open new avenues for collaboration, he added.

Speaking at the meeting, Consul General Idamkin expressed his gratitude to the foreign minister and affirmed his commitment to ensuring efficient consular services for Russians in the Maldives. He also underscored his intention to promote economic partnerships, further strengthening the bilateral ties between Russia and the Maldives, according to a statement by the Foreign Ministry.
