Applications Open for Anti Corruption Commission Membership

The President’s Office opened applications for the two vacant member positions on the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday.

The President’s Office is looking to fill the two seats vacated after two members of the country’s graft watchdog resigned.

ACC’s Vice President Abdul Salaam and member Thoha Mohamed stepped down shortly after the parliamentary independent institutions committee passed to dismiss the duo following allegations of widespread allegations of corruption and abuse of power.

The application period for Anti Corruption Commission membership is open until 12pm of 16 December, the President’s Office said in its announcement.

The government recently amended the relevant laws to mandate the President to appoint the president and vice president of two independent institutions, including the ACC and the Elections Commission.

Under the new amendments, these appointments will require approval by the Parliament, with a majority vote of members present and voting during a parliamentary session.

The amendment ensures that the current president and vice president of the two commissions will continue to remain in their positions unless removed in accordance with the law.

The amendment also revises the resignation procedure, stipulating that the president and vice president of the two commissions must submit their resignation in writing to the President.
