Presidents departs from Azerbaijan after participating at the COP29
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has departed Baku, Azerbaijan following his successful visit to the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). At COP29, President Dr. Muizzu emphasised the urgent need for enhanced climate finance, calling on the global community to tranforms the commitments and pledges into action for countries vulnerable to the threats of climate change. In his addresses, he stressed the challenges the Maldives faces as a low-lying island nation and underscored the importance of decisive global measures to limit warming and support adaptation efforts. On the sidelines of the conference, President Dr. Muizzu engaged in high-level discussions with several world leaders, where he discussed advancing avenues of mutual interest, and advocated to strengthen global effort for climate change mitigation. The discussions primarily focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in tackling shared challenges and in mobilising resources to meet climate goals. Furthermore, President Dr. Muizzu also participated in side events, where he shed light on the Maldives’ climate initiatives and highlighted the country’s ambitions for sustainable development. He reiterated the need for robust financial and technical support to help the Maldives and other SIDS achieve development targets, particularly in renewable energy, climate adaptation, and resilience-building efforts. This official visit to COP29 reaffirms President Dr. Muizzu’s leadership on climate change on the global stage, advocating for policies that address both the immediate and long-term needs of SIDS and other developing nations.
