Previous administration neglected essential needs of schools: Education Minister

Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu has stated that the previous administration had neglected the essential needs of schools. He made these remarks while addressing the “Hafutha 52” panel discussion. During the discussions, Minister Dr. Shafeeu stressed that the previous administration neglected the essential needs for schools for the past five years, adding that the work done to meet the essential needs and ensure proper maintenance of schools were inadequate. As such, the minister voiced the concerns of principles, stating that some schools did not receive funds to paint the school building. He noted that the previous administration launched several infrastructure projects, without prioritising the essential needs of schools. He further stated that projects to establish multipurpose halls were contracted by the previous administration, such that the budget was not allocated effectively. Furthermore, Minister Dr. Shafeeu disclosed that when the current administration assumed office, outstanding payments from the previous government to various parties, stood at USD18.2 million. Of this amount, the minister assured that USD16.2 million have been paid. The previous administration contracted several projects related to the development of schools to various companies. This includes initiatives to develop multipurpose halls and establishing classrooms as well. However, most of the projects were stalled for a prolonged period due to various purposes.
