President announces National Service Programme

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the launch of a national service programme aimed at increasing the number of soldiers and police officers. The President made this announcement during an official ceremony commemorating Victory Day. Speaking at the Victory Day celebrations, President Muizzu emphasised his daily commitment to safeguarding the country’s independence. He highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the military and defence forces and pledged to advance these forces to a higher standard, in line with modern requirements. “A special squadron has been launched to bolster the Coast Guard, and the fleet has been doubled as part of the Coast Guard expansion programme,” he said. The President stated that increasing recruitment into the armed forces is essential for further developing the military. He revealed that the government aims to recruit an additional 1,000 troops annually. Furthermore, the president stated that over 2,000 school leavers currently face limited job or higher education opportunities, presenting an ideal pool of potential recruits for the army and police. The president remarked if young people are provided with quality upbringing, military training, and skills that make them employable, it will be of great benefit to the children, their families, the country, and the military. The president announced that the programme will be open to youth aged 16 and above, with a dedicated law to be drafted for its implementation. A budget of USD 25 million has been allocated for the programme this year, with an equal amount to be allocated annually going forward.
